Insights – short notes from research, teaching and practice.

In short posts, I share what I am currently working on and what keeps me busy in biomechanics. Each post takes about two minutes to read.

  • Where technology meets the body: Human Technology in Sports and Medicine

How should a running shoe, a prosthesis or an exoskeleton be built so that it fits the person? This is exactly where the master’s programme Human Technology in Sports and Medicine at the German Sport University Cologne comes in, which I have coordinated since late 2020. Students from engineering, sport science, medical technology and life sciences learn together how the neuromusculoskeletal system interacts with technology, and how to evaluate and improve sports equipment and medical technology. The programme lasts four semesters, is taught in English and attracts international students. For me it is exciting every year: different academic cultures meet, and the best questions come out of that. It starts every winter semester, with the application deadline in summer.

  • Guest at the ASM: biomechanics for sports medicine practice

Since 2023, I have been a speaker at the ASM (Angewandte Sportmedizin, applied sports medicine) every year. There I give specialist talks on changing topics from biomechanics, sport science, training science and sports technology. The audience consists of physicians with an interest in sports medicine who want to know what research means for their own work. I especially like these events because the questions come straight from everyday practice. Biomechanics then becomes a common language between medicine and training. This translation from science into application is the core of my work.

The next ASM congress (8th) takes place from 8 to 15 May 2027 in Mallorca: information from the organiser FOMED.
